Definition: Ambisonics

A scene-based surround sound system invented in the 1970s by Michael Gerzon. Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) was envisioned to provide a single solution to audio recording. Ambisonics treats the audio scene as a 360-degree sphere of sound converging on a center point, where the microphone is placed. It does not send signals to targeted speakers. As of 2020, Ambisonics is not a major player in recording studios. See surround sound.
