Definition: Amazon Key

A keyless front door system from Amazon that lets people enter a home for deliveries or repairs. Introduced in 2017, Amazon Key requires a Key-compatible smart lock in the door. To record who comes through the door requires a compatible camera. Friends and contractors can be given specific times to arrive, and Key owners are alerted on their smartphones.

In-Home and In-Car Delivery
Amazon Key allows in-house delivery of packages for Amazon Prime members. In 2018, the service was extended to dropping off inside an automobile, starting with OnStar-equipped General Motors models and Volvos with Volvo On Call (2015 and newer).

Leave the Packages in a Safe Place
When people are not at home, Amazon Key allows packages to be delivered inside the house where they might be safer than on the door stoop. (Image courtesy of Amazon.com.)
