Definition: AirPods

Apple's wireless earphones introduced with the iPhone 7 in 2016. Similar in shape to the corded EarPods that have been included starting with the iPhone 5, the Bluetooth-based AirPods are more sophisticated. When placed in the ear, the AirPod's processor provides the intelligence to connect automatically to the iPhone or Apple Watch, and double tapping the AirPods activates Siri. See EarPods, AirPods swapping and PowerBeats.

AirPods Pro
Introduced in 2019, the Pro features a customizable in-ear design with three sets of tips rather than the original universal fit. Active noise cancellation (ANC) blocks out background noise, but users can switch to transparency mode to have a conversation. Adaptive equalization (EQ) tunes the music to the ear's contours. See Noopl.

Over-the-ear AirPods for High Fidelity
In 2020, Apple debuted a high-end set of headphones for music lovers. See AirPods Max.

Corded and Cordless
Although corded EarPods (left and middle) come with iPhones, AirPods are purchased separately. See EarPods.

The Charging Case Is a Battery
The AirPods case is also a portable charger that provides a total of 24 hours of music or 11 hours of talk time on the go. The battery percentages are displayed on the screen of the iOS device.
