Definition: AMASS

(Archive Management And Storage System) Tape management software for Unix from Quantum Corporation, Colorado Springs, CO. Originally developed by ADIC, AMASS made the tape library look like an infinite disk drive to the application. At the back end, it managed the robotic mechanisms that moved the required tape cartridges to the available drives. Supporting optical libraries as well, AMASS was used when an enterprise exceeded its disk storage and needed to migrate to long-term storage.
