Definition: AI umpire

An AI-based system for calling balls and strikes in baseball. In 2026, Major League Baseball implemented the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge. If players dispute the call, it is reviewed on screen from the image previously taken by 12 cameras. It is estimated that umpires miss the call more than a dozen times per game.

Electronic Line Calling
The ABS system is similar to the automated electric line-calling (ELC) system in tennis, which has replaced most line judges. It is predicted that all professional sports will eventually replace human judgment with AI analysis. See AI glossary.
