Definition: AI scams

There will be no end to the scams perpetrated by artificial intelligence. An AI scam that already has people worried is the capability of emulating a person's voice perfectly by capturing only a few spoken words. Imagine the reaction someone might have upon hearing their child or spouse pleading for money over the phone to get them out of a jam and avoid a catastrophe, and there seems to be no doubt whom the person is.

Phishing messages pretend to come from a trusted organization, and AI can make the message more convincing. Fraudulent investment opportunities and charities are favorites for AI scammers. AI can make fake voice calls from a bank, credit card company or the IRS sound more realistic.

There are even scams for accessing popular chatbots that pop up if the user has a typo when searching for one. For example, a ChatGPT scam requires an annual subscription that cannot be cancelled but merely takes the person to the free ChatGPT website. See AI glossary and AI anxiety.
