Definition: AI agent

AI software that interacts with the digital world. AI agents may also impact the physical world via connected machinery such as heating and air conditioning. Robots may use AI agents to make decisions as well.

Extremely versatile, most AI agents employ language models for knowledge, reasoning and making decisions, but they may use traditional machine learning methods that have programmed rules (if this, do that). Agents may employ a combination of models and even conventional programming.

Not Really That New
Agents in the form of intelligent bots have been around for decades (see bot). For the study that evaluates AI agents, see AI Agent Index.

Agents Are Autonomous
The primary difference between an agent and a chatbot is autonomy. Agents can begin processing on their own based on any defined condition; for example, the time of day, a price drop for a product or some other event. Agents require initial instructions but they do not require a prompt from a user each time to activate. Because chatbots increasingly employ agents, the lines between what agents and chatbots can do have blurred. See agent, AI agent sprawl, Model Context Protocol and reinforcement learning.

AI agents add human-like decision making to traditional computer-based tasks. Not only can they handle routine functions such as scheduling a meeting and booking a trip, but they may be able to refine their algorithms to improve their effectiveness the next time. See AI deep research.

A Social Network for AI Agents
Believe it or not, a social network was created to allow AI agents to interact with each other! See Moltbook.

Replacing Everything?
In late 2024, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said AI agents are going to be part of all software applications in the future. Considering Microsoft has made a fortune in business applications, Nadella's comment sparked a lot of controversy.

In April 2026, Google CEO Sundar Pichai claimed that nearly 90% of all businesses were already running AI agents, and the average company was using at least a dozen. We are already in a different technological future. Stay tuned! See AI anxiety.

The Future?
Artisan's eye-popping banner at the HumanX AI conference in 2025 created a lot of attention. "Stop Hiring Humans" means Artisan's AI sales agent does the work of several people, and there is no need to hire more. See HumanX. (Image courtesy of Artisan AI Inc.)
