Definition: AHCI


(Advanced Host Controller Interface) A controller interface for SATA drives that enables the hot swapping and native command queuing features (see hot swap and NCQ). The operating system and file utilities interface with an AHCI driver to command the SATA device to transfer data. Introduced in 2004, AHCI was superseded by NVMe. See SATA and PATA.
