Definition: 8-bit ASCII

Storing ASCII characters in an 8-bit byte. The term itself is misleading, as the ASCII code is always seven bits, not eight. However, since the common storage element is the 8-bit byte, the term is widely used. See 7-bit ASCII and ASCII.
