An electronic measuring tape that has several advantages over a regular mechanical tape. Digital measuring tapes are available as handheld units and smartphone apps. Although regular measuring tapes may have both metric and imperial increments, most digital versions are able to switch between the two and display the converted numbers.
Long Distances
Both handhelds and apps can handle long distances. For hardware tapes, a built-in laser measures the distance. Phone apps create an augmented reality model to estimate distance.
The Mileseey XTAPE1
With seven hours of runtime, the XTAPE1 can take and store 30 measurements up to 330 feet, and the tape module can be upgraded without discarding the entire unit. The built-in mechanical tape has a unique feature: the end can be moved about three millimeters to take precise measurements from either the outer or inner edge of an object (red arrow). AR Measure
There are dozens of measuring apps on the Apple and Google app stores such as this one. Using augmented reality (AR), they can compute the width, depth and height of objects and even handle long distances. (Image courtesy of Google Play.)
