Definition: Tesla Autopilot

The driver assistance system in Tesla electric vehicles. Although Autopilot drives the car under normal conditions, it requires the driver to be attentive and able to take over immediately if required. Accidents have occurred because drivers did not pay attention or fell asleep.

Full Self-Driving (FSD)
Tesla launched its Full Self-Driving (FSD) option in beta in 2020. Its AI-based neural networks have been trained on millions of miles of video obtained from actual driving. Originally intended to be fully automatic, when it came out of beta in 2024, "Supervised" was added to the FSD name, requiring drivers to stay alert. See neural network.

Autopilot Is Now a Paid Subscription
Starting in 2026, new Teslas only come with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC). The lane centering (Autosteer), which was free in Autopilot, is now part of the paid FSD option. See adaptive cruise control, Tesla AI chip, self-driving car and Tesla.
