(1) A file that contains program instructions. See source code.

(2) A file that contains original or essential data that is the starting point for a system of publishing or other processing. For example, the text files of this encyclopedia, which are continuously edited, become the source files for deployment each cycle. They are the source and starting point to generate an XML master that is used to create XML, HTML, Windows, iPhone and Android versions.
