In March 2023, five exploding USB drives were sent to local TV and media outlets throughout Ecuador, which were meant to silence journalists. Only one drive exploded when inserted into the USB port, and the unfortunate reporter suffered mild hand and face injuries. One drive was intercepted, and it is believed the voltage in the USB ports of three other computers was insufficient to trigger the explosion. See
