Definition: silicon carbide


A chemical compound of silicon and carbon. Used as an abrasive compound since the end of the 19th century, silicon carbide (SiC) has high mechanical and thermal properties. Abrasives are manufactured by combining silica sand and carbon in a furnace at high temperature.

Silicon carbide is also a semiconductor, and SiC chips are used in electric vehicles, 5G cellular and aerospace applications. Canadian investment bank Canaccord Genuity estimates that six-inch silicon carbide wafers will increase from 125,000 in 2021 to 4 million by 2030. See silicon.
