Definition: Shopify

A platform for creating an online store. Founded in 2006, Shopify enables merchants to create their own e-commerce presence on the Web. It provides facilities for marketing and managing the site as well as accepting payments and shipping. More than 4,000 Shopify apps are available that integrate with the Shopify infrastructure. As of 2020, more than a million online businesses in countries around the world have been set up via Shopify.

Shopify vs. Amazon
Although both organizations enable entrepreneurs to market products via the Web, Shopify provides the tools for creating custom e-commerce websites. In contrast, Amazon merchants advertise their products on the Amazon website, and users make purchases through Amazon, which ships the merchandise. See e-commerce and Amazon.com.
