Definition: E-Gold

Electronic money tied to gold. Launched in 1996 by Dr. Douglas Jackson and Barry Downey, E-Gold was backed by gold coins stored in a safe deposit box in Florida. Although billions of dollars' worth of business were generated, a federal grand jury in 2007 claimed most of it was for illegal activities. By 2013, existing customers could access funds, but new customers were not allowed to participate. See cryptocurrency.
